Brand New Start - Easter 2016

Brand New Start - Easter 2016

Mar 2016

Human history is littered with a variety of significant events that have greatly impacted the world in which we live.

There was the birth of the Prophet Muhammad in 570 A.D. While his birthdate is just another date in history, Muhammad grew up and became the founder and promoter of Islam – one of the most influential religions in our world today. And no one could overlook the invention of the first movable type printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th Century. His invention is still regarded as the one seminal event that ushered in the Renaissance, Reformation and the Age of Enlightenment. And what about the medical revolution brought about by the discovery of Penicillin. Just imagine a world today with antibiotics and vaccinations? Such medical advances have quite literally saved the human race from possible extinction.

While each of these might be recognised as quite significant events in world history, they pale in comparison to a single event that transpired just over two thousand years ago on a hill outside the city walls of Jerusalem. While many on that day might have overlooked the significance of all that was unfolding in the crucifixion of Christ, John who was a close friend of Jesus tells us exactly what was happening. He said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)

Easter is much more than just another date on our calendar and a good excuse for a holiday. Easter reminds us that Jesus did die on a cross but three days later, he conquered the grave and by rising again He promised those who placed their faith and hope in Him a bright and an eternal future – an opportunity for a brand new start. What you choose to believe about the cross and Jesus Christ really matters this Easter!
